"The Birth of an Elephant"
Howard Solomon needed a model for the Castle elephant, he chose one from a set of four black ebony elephants. The model is 2 1/2 inches tall. Howard first makes a "frame" called an armature. The armature consists of 1/8 and 1/4 inch steel rods. Howard holds the armature against an outside wall to get a look at it before he begins to cover it.
The armature is moved back into the workshop and Howard begins to make it into an elephant. The "skin" is made from oil drums. |

October 2, 2000 So far four oil drums have been used. The toenails are clam shells from a shell pit, and are put on with Bondo. Howard hopes the elephant, yet to be named, will be on display by Christmas. |
